FILM LOVERS CAN FEEL BACK TO THE SIELNT ERA !

In India the motion picture era began at the end of 19th century in Bombay and Calcutta at about the same time. Technology then was not yet advanced enough to let the audience hear what their the actors and actresses were saying, but even then the cinema (silent) had its appeal. As a precursor of modern cinema, the silent cinema's contribution is path breaking. During the 35 years of silent cinema, a great number of films were made in Calcutta, Bombay, Poona, Nasik, Kolhapur,Hyderabad, Bangalore and Madras by a galaxy of film directors and producers and, the screen performers became living legends during their life time. Incidentally, the birth of advertising through cinema also took place in this period with the showing of "Jaba Kusum hair Oil" advertisement in 1903.
The cinema halls and theatres to show motion pictures were built in the metropolitan cities and major towns of India during this period. The art of film making, directing, acting and cinematography developed at this time and the cumulative experience made the evolution into "Talkies" eminently feasible and successful as an effective communication medium and art form. This book deals with the golden period of Indian Cinema from 1896 to 1934 and chronicles with over 150 rare photographs.
The author, Dr. R.K.Verma belongs to one of the rare species of Researchers in Films, Filmologists and Film Historians in the country. His life long commitment combined with abiding interest in the subject and background as a talented journalist and film maker has made him a renowned authority on the subject of Indian Cinema. Dr. Verma's next book, FILMOGRAPHY : TALKIE CINEMA 1931 - 2000 is under compilation and is likely to be released early next year.
